    Open the Register page

Go to the SplitWise website and click Get Started Free or Register. You will see the registration form on the right side.

  2. 2

    Enter your Full Name

Type your name as you want friends to see it โ€” this shows up everywhere when you pay or owe money.

    Enter your Email Address

Use a valid email. This is your login ID. No emails are sent to you โ€” it is only used to sign in.

  4. 4

Friends

Connect with people before adding them to groups

โ„น๏ธ
Why add friends first? You can only add people to a group if they are already your friend on SplitWise. Think of it like adding someone to your contacts before adding them to a WhatsApp group. It prevents strangers from being added accidentally.

  1. 1

    Click "+ New Group"

Find the green + New Group button at the top-right of the Groups page, or use the shortcut on the Dashboard.

  2. 2

    Enter the Group Name

Give it a clear name like "Goa Trip June 2026" or "Flat โ€“ Sector 7". This name appears everywhere so make it recognisable.

  3. 3

    Select the Group Type

Choose one: Trip (vacations), Home (flatmates), Office (work colleagues), Event (parties), or Other. This is just a label and does not change how expenses work.

  4. 4

    Write a description (optional)

A short note about what the group is for. Completely optional.

  5. 5

    Tick friends to invite

Only your confirmed friends appear in this list. You can add more people later via the Invite Link from the group page.

  6. 6

    Click "Create Group"

You are taken straight to the Group Detail page. You are automatically the Leader (Admin) of this group.

๐Ÿ’ก
Invite anyone via link: After creating a group, copy the Invite Link from the group page and share it on WhatsApp. Anyone who registers using that link automatically joins the group โ€” they don't need to be your friend first.

Go to the group page and click the green Add Expense button at the top.

  2. 2

    Write the expense Title

Use a clear, short name like "Taxi to Venue" or "Grocery โ€“ June Week 1".

  3. 3

    Enter the total Amount

Type the full bill amount in rupees (e.g., 1200). This is the total paid, not your personal share.

  4. 4

    Set the Date

The date the expense actually happened. Defaults to today โ€” change it for past expenses.

  5. 5

    Select a Category

Choose from Food & Drink, Transport, Accommodation, Entertainment, Shopping, Utilities, Health, or Other. Used for organisation only.

  6. 6

    Choose "Paid By"

Select whoever physically paid the bill. If Priya paid at the restaurant, select Priya โ€” even if you are entering the expense.

  7. 7

Tick who should split the cost

Check boxes for everyone who should share the bill. The app divides equally among all selected. The payer's own share is auto-marked as settled.

  8. 8

    Click "Add Expense"

Done! Everyone's balance in the group updates automatically.

โš ๏ธ
Person missing from the list? Only group members appear in "Split Among". If someone is missing, they haven't joined the group yet โ€” share the Invite Link with them first.

Settling Up

Record that you've paid someone so balances update

โ„น๏ธ
What does "Settle Up" mean? SplitWise tracks expenses but not actual bank transfers. When you pay someone back in real life (UPI/cash), you then record it here so everyone's balance stays accurate.

โ„น๏ธ Relevant expense splits will be marked as settled automatically.
  1. 1

Find your debt on the group page

Open the group. In the Who Owes Whom section, look for a row where your avatar (with your initial) is on the left โ€” that shows who you owe and how much.

  2. 2

    Click "Settle Up"

Click the teal Settle Up button on that row to open the settlement form.

  3. 3

    Review the amount

The form shows the full amount you owe. It is pre-filled automatically. You can lower it for a partial payment.

  4. 4

Set the date and add a note

Use today's date (or the actual payment date). Add a note like "Paid via GPay" to help everyone track it.

  5. 5

    Click "Confirm Settlement"

The debt is recorded and group balances update instantly. The app marks the oldest unpaid splits as settled first.

๐Ÿ’ก
Partial settlements are allowed. If you owe โ‚น600 but can only pay โ‚น300 now, enter 300. The remaining โ‚น300 stays pending until your next settlement.

Helpful Tips

Things that make SplitWise much easier to use

๐Ÿ”—

Use the Invite Link

You don't need to be friends with someone to invite them. Share the group's invite link โ€” they register, click the link, and they're in automatically.

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Add your phone number

Without a phone number, friends can only find you by your exact email. Adding your mobile makes searching much easier.

๐Ÿงพ

Print the Bill before closing

Before archiving a trip group, click "Bill" to get a printable summary of all expenses. Great for keeping records.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ

Archive completed groups

Once all debts are settled, archive the group so it doesn't clutter your active list. It stays visible as read-only.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Use the Notes field

When adding an expense or settlement, write a note like "Paid via GPay" or "Includes service charge". This avoids confusion later.

๐Ÿ””

Check the Friends badge

The red number on "Friends" in the top bar shows pending requests. Accept them quickly so members can be added to groups.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Settle multiple debts at once

If you owe someone across several expenses in the same group, you can pay them all in one go and record a single settlement for the total.

๐Ÿ”

Remember your password

There is no self-service "Forgot Password" โ€” if you forget it you'll need to ask the admin. Save your password somewhere safe.

๐ŸŽ“ Typical flow for a trip

  1. 1 Create a group (e.g., "Goa Trip") and invite friends via link or friend selection.
  2. 2 As each person pays a bill during the trip, any member records it as an expense โ€” who paid, total amount, and who splits it.
  3. 3 After the trip, visit the group page to see the Who Owes Whom section showing the minimum payments needed.
  4. 4 Each debtor pays the creditor in real life (UPI/cash) and records a Settlement in the app.
  5. 5 Once all balances reach zero, archive the group.
